Consideration of gender aspects

Gender issues are taken into account on two different levels: the scientific content of the research and the personnel working on the research project.

On the level of the scientific content of the research, we take into account the gender component of the social and political exclusion of the unemployed youth. It is necessary to do this for several reasons. Generally speaking, women and men have different experiences with paid labor in terms of aspects such as wages, promotion, the extent and duration of labor market experience (full time, part time, unemployment), and participation in particular industries and occupations. Moreover, women and men have somewhat different experiences and expectations when it comes to issues involving the relationships between work and family life.

However, these differences are not the same across the nations included in this study. Therefore, concerning the explanatory factor of state policies and practices, we will examine to what extent the local authorities in the different countries consider gender differences when it comes to implementing specific measures to improve the conditions and integration of young unemployed.

Second, concerning the explanatory factor of organizational networks, we will analyze to what extent organizations differ in their activities, structures, and network characteristics depending on the gender composition of their membership, or depending on whether they defend gender issues or women constituencies.

Third, concerning the explanatory factor of individual characteristics of young unemployed, we will analyze to what extent the respondents’ gender is relevant for determining varying levels of social and political exclusion and whether gender or gender-related issues interact with the situation on the labor market to determine social and political exclusion levels.
