Work package 2

Organizational survey

This workpackage aims to gather information on activities and networks of organizations. It will provide meso-level data allowing to ascertain the impact of organizational networks and social capital on integration.

The organizational survey will be done in two stages. In a first stage, we will map all the organizations of unemployed as well as all the welfare organizations of the civil society dealing with unemployment and youth in the selected cities. This mapping enables us to obtain a broad picture of the organizational structure of the unemployment field and, hence, of its social capital. The second stage involves a face-to-face survey with a sample of the organizations. We estimate to conduct about 30 interviews with organizations in each city. Our sampling will draw on findings and insights from the institutional analysis. The questionnaire for this part of the study will include questions regarding the organizational characteristics of the associations (e.g. membership, staff, financial resources), the activities they organize, the inter-organizational networks in which they are involved, and the type and frequency of contacts and exchanges they have with different sorts of local, regional, national, and international institutions. The questionnaire will include network questions (measures of cohesion, centrality, network structure and density, etc.). Additionally, some open-ended questions will be included to leave room for some explorative and inductive data retrieval. A pretest of the questionnaire will be performed in each country in order to check its feasibility and suitability. The data will be analyzed through traditional statistical methods and through network-analysis techniques.
