Work package 4

In-depth qualitative analysis

This workpackage aims to provide a more detailed account of the social and political exclusion of young long-term unemployed based on a qualitative analysis of their individual trajectories. It looks at the mechanisms and processes through which young unemployed become progressively excluded from the social and political spheres. The goal of this workpackage is to deepen our understanding of mechanisms and processes through which young unemployed become, objectively and subjectively, progressively excluded from the social and political spheres, and which strategies they adopt to cope with this situation.

We will perform in-depth interviews with a small sample of young long-term unemployed. We plan to interview about 30 individuals in each city. It is intended to extract this sample from those individuals having participated in the standardized survey. The fact that we will interview some young unemployed a second time, will allow us to be more focused and specific in regard to the qualitative questionnaire With the results of the individual survey as a reference point, we will conduct a theoretical sampling.

More specifically, we will use a “most different cases” approach to select pertinent interviewees. At the same time, we will define a quota plan in order to organize these dissimilar cases into a table, which matches relevant categories and patterns of our standardized sample. In this way, we can generate complementarities between both data and thus guarantee enough potential for systematic triangulation.
